Lecture 1 : Sensor Placement and Submodularity

چکیده
We first consider a stochastic optimization problem where the solution needs to be constructed upfront just based on probabilistic information about the inputs. In the sensor placement problem, there are n candidate locations where sensors can be placed, and k ! n sensors. The locations sense correlated data, and the goal is to place the sensors in a fashion that maximizes the amount of information they capture about the physical phenomena being sensed.

Submodularity of Storage Placement Optimization in Power Networks
In this paper, we consider the problem of placing energy storage resources in a power network when all storage devices are optimally controlled to minimize system-wide costs. We propose a discrete optimization framework to accurately model heterogeneous storage capital and installation costs as these fixed costs account for the largest cost component in most grid-scale storage projects. Identif...
متن کاملAdaptive Submodularity: A New Approach to Active Learning and Stochastic Optimization
Solving stochastic optimization problems under partial observability, where one needs to adaptively make decisions with uncertain outcomes, is a fundamental but notoriously difficult challenge. In this paper, we introduce the concept of adaptive submodularity, generalizing submodular set functions to adaptive policies. We prove that if a problem satisfies this property, a simple adaptive greedy...
متن کاملDesign and evaluation of two distributed methods for sensors placement in Wireless Sensor Networks
Adequate coverage is one of the main problems for distributed wireless sensor networks and The effectiveness of that highly depends on the sensor deployment scheme. Given a finite number of sensors, optimizing the sensor deployment will provide sufficient sensor coverage and save power of sensors for movement to target location to adequate coverage. In this paper, we apply fuzzy logic system to...

متن کاملOn Bisubmodular Maximization
Bisubmodularity extends the concept of submodularity to set functions with two arguments. We show how bisubmodular maximization leads to richer value-of-information problems, using examples in sensor placement and feature selection. We present the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for a wide class of bisubmodular maximizations.
